The One Leg Stand Test Explained

In conducting a One Leg Stand Field Sobriety Test, the officer will be looking for several points of failure

for the results of the tests to be validated by NHTSA standardization.

the points of failure for the One Leg Stand Test are:

A. The suspect sways while balancing;

B. The suspect raises his or her arms six or more inches from the side of the body to keep balance;

C. The suspect is able to keep one fot off the ground, but resorts to hopping in order to maintain balance;

D. The suspect is not able to maintain the one leg stand position, putting the foot down one or more times during the officer's 30 second count.

In addition the suspect is required to count by 1000's up to 30.
